Fundamentals of psychotherapy 1 WF-PS-N-PT1
A series of lectures on psychotherapy. It covers issues such as the history of psychotherapy, basic assumptions, goals and methods, theories of personality development, and views on psychopathology. The lectures will present the basic directions of psychotherapy, research on effectiveness and efficiency. The lecture will illustrate clinical material in the form of case reports. Students will learn about psychoanalytical currents (drive theory, object relationship theory, independent school in psychoanalysis, intersubjective approach), psychodynamic theory (mentalization based approach, transference based approach). Case reports will relate to psychotherapy in personality contractions, eating disorders and psychoses.
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with modern knowledge of psychotherapy and views on personality structure, mental disorders and psychotherapy.

Learning outcomes
1. The student defines and discusses the differences between the four main theoretical currents in psychotherapy:
psychoanalytical, behavioral-cognitive, humanistic-existential and systemic
2. The student is able to discuss the results of empirical research on the factors determining the effectiveness of psychotherapy
3. The student defines the differences between the basic phenomena in psychoanalysis: transfer and countertransference
4. The student describes the main differences between transfer phenomena in neurotic patients and deeper disorders than neurotic
5. The student describes the differences between good and bad psychotherapist's contact with the client
6. The student defines the differences between phenomena - resistance and resistance
7. The student describes releasing as a healing phenomenon in psychotherapy
8. The student calls the differences between - desensitization and implosive therapy - based on the principles of classical conditioning
9. The student can determine the differences between (1) awareness, insight and (2) modification of cognitive patterns
Assessment criteria
written paper,
sudent uses the main concepts of psychotherapy properly,
student understands the specificity of particular approaches and their usefulness in the treatment of patients / clients,
student is able to formulate his own point of view on the strengths and weaknesses of particular approaches,
