Seminar: Qualitative research methods WF-PS-N-KMBJ
Qualitative research - especially combined with quantitative methods in the mixed-methods approach - is increasingly applied in social research. During the classes, students will learn about the key characteristics of qualitative research, their capabilities and limitations. They will learn what types of research questions are particularly suited for qualitative studies. Special emphasis will be placed on the benefits of using different mixed-methods models, and on the challenges and limitations related to the mixed approach. During the practical classes, students will learn the basic techniques of qualitative research (in-depth interviews, focus groups, participant observation). They will learn the practical aspects of conducting qualitative research, starting with sample selection and recruitment of respondents. They will acquire sills related to designing and conducting individual or group interviews. Students will also learn basic methods of qualitative data analysis (e.g., grounded theory approach). Selected methods of coding and material reduction will be presented.

ECTS:
Participation in classes - 30 hours
Homeworks - 25 hours
Individual consultation, discussing homeworks - 5 hours
Total: 60 hours = 2 ECTS
Assessment criteria
To successfully complete the course, it is necessary to attend the classes and to complete the homework assignments.
Class attendance: Due to the nature of the classes (blocked meetings and workshop) only one absence per semester is allowed; in the case of a larger number of absences, a student will need to complete an additional homework, related to the topic of the missed class.
Homeworks: During the semester, students will receive three homework assignments, in which they should demonstrate the following skills and competences:
- Ability to pose research questions and to select appropriate research methods within a qualitative approach;
- Ability to design an individual or group interview scenario;
- Ability to critically assess qualitative and mixed-method research.
