History of psychological thought WF-PS-N-HMP
Thematic scope of lectures provided during this subject, as well as their main aim, is to introduce students to fundamental terms, questions, and problems of classical psychological thought with particular acknowledgment of historical and philosophical roots as well as cultural and biographical context of emergence and logic of change in paradigms in which it has been developed.
Aims:
- to provide knowledge on the subject of the philosophical-historical and cultural background of the emergence of psychology's subject
- to provide knowledge about the structure of the knowledge process in psychology
- to discuss the matter of specificity and identity of psychology as a science
- to explain the variety of research methods and thinking styles within psychology
- to introduce big questions and problems that psychology has been facing
- to understand assumptions of psychological schools and main psychological conceptions of a man

Term 2025/26_L:
The thematic scope of the lectures offered as part of this course focuses on providing students with a broad and in-depth introduction to the fundamental issues of classical psychological thought. The primary aim of the course is to familiarize participants with the basic concepts, questions, and problems that have shaped psychology as a field of scientific inquiry since its inception. Particular attention is given to the historical and philosophical origins of the discipline, as well as to the cultural and biographical contexts in which specific psychological concepts emerged. An important component of the lectures is also the analysis of the dynamics of psychology’s development, including the logic and mechanisms of paradigm shifts within which the discipline evolved in the past and continues to operate today. Course objectives: to provide knowledge of the philosophical, historical, and cultural foundations underlying the emergence of psychology as an independent scientific discipline, to familiarize students with the structure and specificity of the cognitive process in psychology, to encourage reflection on the distinctiveness, status, and identity of psychology among other sciences, to raise awareness of the diversity of research methods, theoretical perspectives, and styles of thinking present in psychology, to discuss key questions and fundamental problems that psychology has addressed at various stages of its development and continues to confront today, to develop an understanding of the core assumptions of the major psychological schools and the basic conceptions of the human being formulated within psychology. |
