The subject includes 30 hours of exercises in general, inorganic and organic chemistry. The classes include short theoretical introductions to the topics discussed, practical application of knowledge in the form of exercises and tests, as well as compulsory and voluntary homework assignments.. The emphasis is primarily on knowing the symbols of the elements, writing formulae of chemical compounds, naming inorganic and organic chemical compounds. Another block is to familiarise students with ways of expressing the concentration of solutions (percentage concentration, molar concentration, fractions: molar, volumetric, mass) and the conversion of concentrations. The final block deals with oxidation and reduction reactions. These blocks use the skills of arranging chemical reaction equations, selecting stoichiometric coefficients, as well as knowledge of basic chemical laws and stoichiometric calculations based on the course of a reaction.
Teaching methods:
A brief review of basic concepts (based on lectures), practical application of the rules discussed by solving problems from the thematic blocks, partial tests after each block, and three homework assignments in the form of presentations.
Thematic blocks
1. Introductory classes
2. Expressing and converting concentrations
3. Oxidation and reduction reactions
4. Nomenclature of organic and inorganic compounds

Learning outcomes
Student:
- defines types of concentrations (T.02), distinguishes between redox and exchange reactions and justifies their selection (T.03), applies the nomenclature of organic and inorganic compounds (T.04)
- solves problems involving different types of concentrations and concentration conversions (T.02), calculates the number of electrons exchanged in redox reactions and, on this basis, selects reaction coefficients (T.03), names organic and inorganic compounds and draws their structures (T.04)

Assessment criteria
Two excused absences are permitted. The final grade for the course is calculated as a weighted average of the marks obtained in partial tests (weighting 0.6) and homework assignments in the form of presentations (weighting 0.4).
