The subject includes 30 hours of exercises in general, inorganic and organic chemistry. Classes include short theoretical introductions on the topics discussed, practical application of knowledge through exercises, and colloquia and voluntary homework. The emphasis is primarily on knowing the symbols of the elements, writing formulae of chemical compounds, naming inorganic and organic chemical compounds. Another block is to familiarise students with ways of expressing the concentration of solutions (percentage concentration, molar concentration, fractions: molar, volumetric, mass) and the conversion of concentrations. The final block deals with oxidation and reduction reactions. These blocks use the skills of arranging chemical reaction equations, selecting stoichiometric coefficients, as well as knowledge of basic chemical laws and stoichiometric calculations based on the course of a reaction.
Term 2021/22_L:
System of SI units - basic units, related and complementary units - unit conversion. Describing the formulas of elements, chemical compounds, naming of inorganic and organic chemical compounds. Arrangement of equations of chemical reactions, selection of stoichiometric coefficients. Basic chemical laws. Mol, molar mass, molar volume of gases. Stoichiometric calculations based on the course of the reaction. |

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE:
Students will know the symbols of elements, chemical formulae, and nomenclature of basic organic and inorganic compounds. He/she knows the basic chemical laws, how to express concentrations of solutions, and how to convert concentrations. Students will know what oxidation and reduction reactions are and how to select the stoichiometric coefficients of such reactions.
SKILLS:
Students can write chemical formulae of organic and inorganic compounds based on their names and names of compounds based on their formulae. They can apply basic chemical laws and formulae to chemical calculations in terms of calculating and converting concentrations of solutions. Students will be able to distinguish electron-free reactions from oxidation and reduction reactions and be able to select stoichiometric coefficients for redox reactions.
COMPETENCES:
The student is prepared to carry out basic chemical calculations.
ECTS [1 ECTS = 30(25) hrs]:
participation in exercises: 30 hrs.
preparation for classes and colloquia: 30 hrs.
total hours: 60 [60/30(25)=2]
ECTS number: 2
Assessment criteria
The final grade is primarily based on the marks of the colloquia. In addition, the student's attendance in class, activity and the amount of voluntary homework handed in are also taken into account.
