Education and upbringing in the cultures of the world WNP-PEZ-EWK
The curriculum: Lectures will cover the following introductory issues: cultural and religious pluralism in the world and the related challenges; the universal properties of culture and religion; the function of religion (as an aspect of culture) in societal life. Next, systems of upbringing in cultures inspired by non-Christian religions will be presented: (1) Upbringing in Judaism (basic knowledge about Judaism; the child in Jewish society; the principles of upbringing according to the Hebrew Bible, the Talmud and tradition); (2) Upbringing in Islam (basic knowledge about Islam; the child in Islam; the principles of upbringing according to the Koran and Muslim tradition); (3) Upbringing in the cultures of India (basic knowledge about Hinduism and Neo-Hinduism; the child in Hindu tradition; Hindu principles of upbringing); (4) Upbringing in Buddhism and Chinese universalism: Confucianism, Taoism, Chinese Buddhism). Lectures will also present contemporary systems of education shaped by particular non-Christian cultures and religions (including the education system in Israel, countries of Islamic culture, in the Far East and India).
