Latin Authors: Hosius, Hilary, Rufinus, Optatus of Mileve WT-SSTA-LA
Getting to know the heritage of Latin authors: Hosius of Cordoba, Hilarious of Poitiers, Rufinus of Aquileia, Optate of Milevis will take place according to the following three-stage scheme: biography, issues contained in written works, key elements of theological thought. An important moment of the course will be the analysis of selected fragments of the works of the authors.
Main issues:
1. Emperor Constantine's influence on the situation of Christianity in the Roman Empire.
2. The formation of the Trinitarian dogma in the 4th century.
3. Hosius of Córdoba as a defender of the Nicene faith.
4. The role of Hilarious of Poitiers in the victory of the Nicene faith in the West.
5. Analysis of De synodis and writings of Hilarious to Constantius
6. Theology of Hilarious' De Trinitate
7. Commentary on the Psalms of Hilarious as an example of a typological interpretation of the Old Testament.
8. The role of Rufinus of Aquileia in popularizing Origen's inheritance in the West.
9. The dispute over Peri archon between Rufinus and Jerome.
10. The Importance of the Commentary on the Apostles' Creed by Rufinus.
11. Rufinus and the monastic life.
12. Optat of Milewe in the fight against Donatism.

1. The student knows:
- biographies and titles of works of Hosius of Córdoba, Hilarious of Poitiers, Rufinus of Aquileia and Optatus of Milewe
- the history and theological problems of the era in which these authors lived
- the general content of the following works: De Synodis, De Trinitate, Commentary on the Psalms (Hilarious of Poitiers), Apology against Jerome and Commentary on the Apostolic Creed (Rufinus),
- the history of the formation of the Trinitarian dogma in the 4th century and the positions of individual authors
- the dispute over Origen's inheritance
- the development of monastic life in the IV-V centuries
2. The student is able to:
- subject to theological analysis the content of selected passages in the works of Hosius of Cordoba, Hilarious of Poitiers, Rufinus of Aquileia and Optatus of Milewe
- indicate the type of exegesis of biblical texts used by them
- compare authors' positions and indicate their ideological similarities and differences
Assessment criteria
1. Active participation in lectures (presence, participation in discussions) - 30%
2. Personal work verified by exercises during the semester - 20%
3. Final exam or written paper on an approved topic (12,000 characters) - 50%.
