Course objectives: Communication is a fundamental dimension of culture and should be discussed in its context. In addition to basic knowledge of communication theory and media theory, the course focuses on the role of communication for creating, sustaining and changing culture, especially in its social, as well as sign, semiotic aspect. Communication theories will also be discussed in the context of the philosophy of dialogue and encounter, and in practical terms, as theory and practice of good communication.
The aim of the course is to teach the basic theories, concepts and models of communication, as well as the need for knowledge of cultural communication in the modern world (intercultural communication). During the course, students will learn the history and methods of research on communication.

Learning outcomes
Student:
EK nr 1 - describes and characterizes new fields of communication, presents various aspects of the influence of new media on society;
EK nr 2 - interprets texts of visual culture (film, visual advertisement, body images in culture), using basic knowledge of semiotics;
EK nr 3 - presents a theory and critique of mass media, indicates social and cultural mechanisms of mass communication functioning;
EK nr 4 - analyzes an advertisement text using knowledge from communication theory, reads various cultural codes in it;
EK no. 5 - knows ethical problems connected with intercultural communication, especially in the field of acquiring and using information about foreign cultures;
30 hours - active participation in lectures
5 hours - consultations with the teacher
15 hours - preparation for the colloquium (and current classes)
10 hrs - reading texts
60 hours - altogether

Assessment methods and criteria:
The final assessment will consist of a sum of individual pieces of work testing the acquisition of knowledge at the stage of the whole academic year. The work will be done through the moodle platform and MS TEams.
