Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies WSE-PO-E-IPCS
The course has an interdisciplinary character and offers students an introduction into the field of peace and conflict studies. Its aim is to familiarize students with the concepts of peace studies, conflict studies, international humanitarian law and contemporary armed conflicts. The course provides an overview of research in peace and conflict studies as well as the most significant concepts in the field. Students are encouraged to apply theoretical knowledge on contemporary conflicts in international relations.
The following topics will be discussed within the course:
1. The notion of peace and conflict studies. Definitions of peace and conflict. Methodology of conflict research
2. Ius ad bellum and ius in bello. Fundaments of international humanitarian law
3. The concept of “just war”
4. Old wars and new wars
5. Humanitarian intervention
6. Conflict transformation and peacebuilding
7. Contemporary armed conflicts
