The opening of borders within EU countries, facilitation of movement between areas of various countries also from outside the European area, reduction of barriers created by individual labor markets as well as the development of new communication technologies have resulted in recent decades of increasing the scale of international movement of people and international exchange of goods and services on a hitherto unknown scale. These mechanisms are the basic source of the occurrence of life situations with a foreign element and the accompanying civil law relations. Their correct assessment requires first the determination of the law applicable to it. This purpose is served by a special set of conflict-of-law rules whose function is to delimit in space in relation to individual life situations in the field of civil, family and guardianship relations as well as labor law of the spheres of operation of the legal systems of different countries, by indicating which of them should be used.In other words, they specify what law will apply to assess a given life situation, and not only for the purposes of the dispute arising from it, but also for determining the appropriate conduct of the parties. The aim of the lecture is to discuss general institutions of private international law as well as to characterize the methods of determining the law applicable to specific categories of relations. Theoretical issues constituting the subject of the course will be presented in connection with examples of specific life situations against which they may appear in practice. The discussion of conflict-of-law rules that determine the categories of relations will be accompanied by examples of their application, both of a model nature and taken from the court's judicial practice.
