1. Introductory issues: the importance of the history of the law of nations in the teaching of international relations; history and contemporary international law. Periodization of the history of the law of nations. History of the law of nations vs. history of its teaching.
2.General issues: historical development of the international community, basic concepts of the law of nations.
3.The law of nations in pre-Columbian times: the international community in ancient and medieval times and its changes; the law of nations in ancient and medieval times (treaties, the law of war, including the concept of just war, and the law of peace; diplomatic relations, trade relations); Poland and the law of nations; the beginnings of the study of the law of nations; Polish science and the law of nations.
4.The significance of geographical discoveries for changes in the structure of the international community and in the development of the law of nations; legal methods of colonisation and colonial conquest; competition for power over the seas, the science of the law of nations and colonisation and colonial conquest
5.The formation of European order and the development of basic institutions of the law of nations in the 16th - 18th centuries: from the family of Christian nations to the Westphalian system of nation states, the birth and development of diplomacy, the American and French revolutions and the law of nations; the beginnings of modern international arbitration; the development of the science of the law of nations ? confrontation between naturalism and positivism; the loss of statehood by the Republic of Poland; the Polish science of the law of nations in the 16th - 18th centuries
The law of nations in the 19th c. and at the turn of the 20th c.; changes in the European system and the development of the law of nations: Holy Alliance, formation of the colonial system, conflicts between European powers and the law of nations; codification and constitutionalization of national law and the law of nations; development of treaty law, beginnings of codification of the law of nations (private and public codifications; diplomatic law, law of war, dispute settlement); beginnings of international organizations, international river law, development of international arbitration; law development of the science of the law of nations in the world and in Polish territories: domination of positivism.
7.The League of Nations period: 1918-1939/1946; the LN as an international organisation; the role of the LN in the development of the law of nations, in particular the importance of the Permanent Court of International Justice; the beginnings of the decay of the colonial system; codification tendencies in the law of nations (the law of treaties, the fight against slavery); the drive to outlaw war as a means of settling international disputes; the rebirth of the Polish State and its decline; the science of the law of nations in the world and in Poland.
