Iconography of Jewish art: selected issues WNHS-HS-MON0
The class is designed to teach participants about the following topics:
1. Organizational classes - discussion of the syllabus, grading criteria, grading scale, scope of the colloquium, getting acquainted with the participants' level of knowledge in art history. A brief history of Jews and Judaism.
2. Specifics of art, its written sources, basics of iconography and terminology. The Tabernacle and Temple of Jerusalem - biblical description, equipment and its symbolic meaning.
3. Synagogue - terminology, history and sources, architecture, functions, furnishings, its references to the Jerusalem Temple.
4.Iconography of synagogue decoration and its sources, the most important motifs - zodiac, animal motifs, floral motifs, temple motifs, colors; brief discussion of the decoration program of the synagogue of Gwoździec.
5.-6. Haskalah and the origins of secular Jewish art. Visual arts and their role in depicting the search for national identity in the context of aspirations for assimilation and Zionist iconography - Alexander Lesser, Maurycy Gottlieb, Maurycy Trumpeter, Samuel Hirszenberg, Moses Lilien, Wilhelm Wachtel (motifs: the Jew of the Eternal Wanderer, the Jewish cemetery, the new model of the Jew).
7. Christ figure, Holy Family and Pieta - transformations of meaning in Jewish art in the context of European art and the Holocaust.
8. online colloquium - January 21, 2025.
Class - 15 hours - includes a lecture illustrated with a presentation and video footage. Students are required to read the text indicated by the instructor before the class and to answer 2 questions posed in the form of an online test at the beginning of the class - participants must have the appropriate tools - smartphone / laptop / tablet. All texts are in MTeams with the list of articles and test dates.

Learning outcomes
1 The lecture participant has a basic knowledge of the importance of the history of Jewish art among the humanities and is aware of its thematic and methodological specificity.
2. The student has a structured basic knowledge of the iconography of Jewish art - religious art of the 17th - early 20th centuries and secular art of the late 19th to the 1990s created in Poland and Europe. In particular: the iconology of the synagogue and its relationship to the Temple of Jerusalem, the iconography of synagogue decoration, in the visual arts - the motif of the Eternal Wanderer Jew and its symbolism, the iconography of the Christ figure, the symbolism of Zionist art.
3. Knows and understands the basic methods of interpreting Jewish art objects and the terminology appropriate to it. Understands the impact of historical and cultural conditions on art and its layer of meaning.
4. Is aware of the complexity of issues related to Jewish art and the need to study it.
5. Knows institutions that research the issues connected with Jewish art.
6. Student is able to construct a logical written and oral statement in English on Jewish art at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Student workload includes 45 [90] hours [1 hour x 2 for foreign language classes] = 3 ECTS: 15 [30] hours monographic lecture + 30 [60] hours: 20 [40] hours - reading and analysis of primary literature and 5 articles indicated to be read; 10[20] hours preparation for the credit colloquium.
Assessment criteria
REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETING THE COURSE:
- attendance in class - max 30 pts / one absence allowed, further absences "cost" minus 4 pts each
- answers to 5 mini tests containing 2 questions each on a given article - max 5 X 2 points = 10 points
- a colloquium - max 60 points, 36 points pass.
- SEMESTER GRADE - MAX 100 PTS [60 PTS PASS].
- attendance in class - max 30 pts
- answers to 5 mini-tests from the lecture text - max 10 points
- passing the colloquium - max 60 pts, minimum 36 pts.
- Grading scale: 60-75 = 3,0 / 76-79 = 3,5 / 80-90 = 4,0 / 91-94 = 4,5 / 95-100 = 5,0
