Hospital infections WMCM-NU-HINF
Introducing the student to the problem of the occurrence of infections and transmission of biological pathogens in health care institutions. The student learns about the epidemiology of infectious diseases and methods of their prevention, taking into account the specificity of the hospital environment as well as the legal basis and methods of fighting infections among patients and medical staff.
Lectures:
1. Basic definitions and concepts related to the problems of nosocomial infections and infectious diseases. 2. The concept of infections associated with the provision of health services, including nosocomial infections. 3. Sources and reservoirs of microorganisms in the community and hospital environment. 4. Paths of microbial spread. 5. Principles of patient isolation.
Seminars:
1. Applying the principles of isolation in practice (discussion of personal protective equipment).
2. Hand hygiene as a fundamental element of preventing nosocomial infections (WHO guidelines).
3. Principles of maintaining hospital hygiene (principles of surface and tools decontamination, sterilization, waste management)
4. Methods of preventing and combating hospital infections in particular types of infections (in blood, systemic infection, nosocomial pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and surgical site infection) gastrointestinal infections).
5. Occupational exposure of medical personnel to biological agents (hepatitis, HIV, Flu, and others, rules of post-exposure procedure).

1. Epidemiological foundations of the surveillance of nosocomial infections - collecting and processing data, rules for collecting information on nosocomial infections.
2. Prevention of nosocomial infections, organization of a system for the prevention and combating of infections and infectious diseases.
3. Implementation of standards of prevention of nosocomial infections in nursing practice; using measures to protect oneself, patients, and co-workers against infections.
4. Selected procedures for the prevention of hospital infections: hand hygiene, rules of patient isolation, rules for handling medical waste, rules for handling dirty hospital underwear
4. Methods of hospital environment decontamination: disinfection, sterilization
5. Microbiology of the hospital environment.
6. Health protection of medical personnel (prevention of infections among medical personnel, post-exposure procedure).
7. Ways to control the spread, prevent and combat nosocomial infections.
8. Hospital infections in various clinical areas.
9. Standards of management in nosocomial infections: supervision of peripheral puncture.
10. Hospital hygiene (maintenance of cleanliness in a hospital) - procedures.
