History in the museum (introduction to the methods of research) WH-MU-I-1-HisMuMe-L
The essential objective of this course is to give students an understanding of history as an academic discipline taking into account the specific context of this field of study: How museums operate as institutions, in which history is an academic practice as well as a quantum of knowledge about the past made available.
The museum is one of a variety of institutions that integrate various areas of study. In museums, be it as a visitor or a contender for a job, you can meet representatives of a variety of academic fields: liberal arts, history or social science oriented. To be part of a successful team a solid base of knowledge of those areas is necessary as well as the ability to read a multi-faceted institution.
One such discipline is history, especially palpable in historical museums, even more so in those commonly referred to as narrative museums, a category that in Poland has been growing over the past two decades (e. g. The Museum of the Warsaw Rising, The Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN, The Museum of the Second World War). In these museums history is presented as a narrative allowing for a fuller understanding of the museums’ collections.
History also makes for a useful tool in public life as it helps understand our contemporary world, answer questions of identity, of our place and role in international relations. Knowing history allows for an affirmation of our ancestors’ accomplishments and also gives us the opportunity to avoid mistakes made by previous generations.
