The lecture introduces the subject of the philosophy of science. During the course, students learn about the main issues of this branch of philosophy, learn about its main theories and issues. The issues discussed during the course will be presented in their historical context, thanks to which the student will have the opportunity to see how the philosophical reflection on science developed. Due to the fact that the philosophy of science mainly concerns issues related to exact sciences, the subject of the lectures will also be extended to issues related to the philosophy of social sciences. Participants of the course will have the opportunity to learn about the problems of the methodology of social sciences and humanities and learn about selected concepts of researching society.
In order to make it easier for the students to get started with the subject of the lecture, it will be divided into two parts. The first part will be of a historical nature and will deal with issues related to the development of social sciences and humanities. In this part, students will learn about selected ways of researching society, meet selected thinkers who contributed to the development of social sciences, and will have the opportunity to see the philosophical works on which they based their methodological concepts. The second part will deal strictly with the issues of the philosophy of science. During this part, the basic problems, issues and theories of the philosophy of science will be discussed. The issues discussed in this part will be illustrated with examples from the first part.
