Philosophy and Ethics of Sport WF-FI-212-WMAN-ME23
The phenomenon of sport can be considered from many points of view: in the context of the history of cultures, the health of the body and its functioning in extreme conditions, the educational function of the training regime and the economic importance of major events. The philosophy of sport is first an attempt to reach the essence of this human activity by analyzing its functions and goals in relation to the metaphysical concept of body and spirit. The axiology of sport is being developed more broadly; it is indicated that it is a good in itself, but also supports the implementation of many other goods, such as health and physical condition, self-knowledge, character education, integration of smaller and larger communities, fight against exclusion, and beauty.
Ethics plays an important role in the philosophy of sport. In the light of personalism, different types of sports activity will - due to their nature and effects - be assessed differently, including as unacceptable. We should also pay attention to a number of moral threats related primarily to professional sports. Negation of the principle of fair play (primarily through the use of doping), focusing on financial matters and striving for vain fame, corruption, taking excessive risks or gladiatorship are factors that force us to approach certain forms of sport with caution or even exclude them.

The student understands the nature of sport and its functions in the individual and social life of man - currently and in history (especially European culture) - and relates them to the philosophical image of man, his corporeality and spirituality.
The student sees the dependence of the philosophy of sport on other areas of philosophy, especially anthropology, axiology, ethics and aesthetics.
The student understands the values implemented by practicing sports, both amateur and professional, and the axiological differentiation of both fields.
The student is able to indicate current and possible future moral threats related to practicing sports and organizational activities and assess these phenomena in the light of ethical assumptions.
Assessment criteria
Knowledge:
- grade 2 (unsatisfactory): the student does not know basic terms and concepts and does not identify problems related to the philosophy and ethics of sport
- for a grade of 3 (satisfactory): the student knows the basic terms and issues related to theoretical sport, but is unable to discuss and develop individual issues in detail
- for a grade of 4 (good): The student identifies and distinguishes problems related to the philosophy and ethics of sport and characterizes them in a correct way
- grade 5 (very good): has excellent knowledge of issues related to the philosophy and ethics of sport and uses the knowledge contained in the indicated literature
Skills
- grade 2 (unsatisfactory): the student is unable to characterize contemporary philosophical and ethical problems of sport
for a grade of 3 (dst.): the student is able to characterize philosophical issues related to sport, but does not notice their complexity, interdisciplinarity and connections with social life, politics and culture
- for a grade of 4 (db.): the student analyzes and evaluates selected problems related to sports, is able to notice the comprehensive nature of individual issues.
- grade 5 (very good): the student is able to critically respond to historical and contemporary philosophical and ethical discourse, as well as take his own position on specific issues regarding the phenomenon of sport and justify it correctly
Competencies:
Is aware of the complexity of the detailed issues of philosophy and ethics of sport. Demonstrates criticism towards various positions present in the discourse.
