Seventeenth-century Natural Philosophy and the Scientific Revolution WF-FI-123-WMAN-KU23
'Scientific Revolution' is a popular phrase to describe the events leading up to the modern conception of science, primarily the natural sciences. Traditionally, this process is placed in the seventeenth century. However, research by historians of philosophy and science has resulted in discoveries in recent decades that have led some to question the very fact of the emergence of the phenomenon known as the scientific revolution in the seventeenth century. The lecture will attempt to answer the question of whether such a revolution then took place. Important to the search for an answer to this question will be a definition of the concepts of both 'revolution' and 'science'. In addition, the important role played by a field traditionally treated as the antithesis of rationality - alchemy - will be pointed out. According to one scholar, there is a need to go beyond the main narrative of the triumph of reason over nonsense and consider the interdependence of the supposed opposites in the creation of a new science in the 16th and 17th centuries.
