Latin Authors: Minutius Felix, Novatian, Cyprian, Tertullian WT-SSTA-L
Getting to know the heritage of Latin authors: Minuncius Felix, Novatian, Tertullian and Cyprian will take place according to the following three-stage scheme: biography, issues contained in written works, key elements of theological thought. An important moment of the course will be the analysis of selected fragments of the works of the authors.
Main issues:
1. Minucius Felix as a Christian apologist.
2. "Octavius" as an example of apologetic argumentation in the 2nd century.
3. Novatian on the background of the Church in Rome in the era of persecution.
4. Novatian's contribution to the development of trinitarian theology and terminology.
5. Tertullian - rhetorician, lawyer, radical man.
6. General characteristics of Tertullian's works.
7. The main ideas contained in "Apologeticus".
8. Understanding of resurrection in the works of Tertullian.
9. Cyprian - the steadfast bishop of Carthage.
10. General characteristics of Cyprian's works.
11. The charitable dimension of the Church shown in the work "On merciful works and alms".
12. Understanding the unity of the Church in the work "On the Unity of the Catholic Church".

1. The student knows:
- the biographies and titles of works by Minucius Felix, Novatian, Tertullian, Cyprian
- the history of the era in which these authors lived
- the general content of the following works: Octavius (of Minucius Felix), Apologeticus and On the Resurrection (of Tertullian), On Works and Almsgiving and On the Unity of the Catholic Church (of Cyprian)
- the importance of Christian apologetics in era of persecutions
- the essential elements of the theology of Minucius Felix, Novatian, Tertullian, Cyprian
2. The student is able to:
- subject to theological analysis of the content of selected passages in the works of Minucius Felix, Novatian, Tertullian, Cyprian
- indicate the type of exegesis of biblical texts used by them
- compare the positions of the authors and indicate their ideological and theological dependencies
Assessment criteria
1. Active participation in lectures (presence, participation in discussions) - 30%
2. Personal work verified by exercises during the semester - 20%
3. Final exam or written paper on an approved topic (12,000 characters) - 50%.
