Asian Churches WT-SST-KOAZ
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the history, theology, and contemporary reality of Christian churches on the Asian continent. The course traces the origins and development of Christianity in Asia from its earliest forms, with particular emphasis on the Eastern Church during the first millennium and its missionary activities spanning from the Middle East to India, Central Asia, and China. It discusses the processes by which local Christian communities took shape, their theological, liturgical, and organizational traditions, and their place within Asia’s multicultural and multireligious environment.
The next part of the lecture is devoted to Catholic missionary endeavors from the late Middle Ages, beginning with the first attempts by various religious orders to establish a permanent presence of the Latin Church in the 17th century. Particular attention will be paid to the process of the inculturation of Christianity, the relationships between missionaries and Asian cultures and religions, and the successes and challenges associated with establishing local church communities.
The lecture will also analyze the transformations taking place in the Asian Churches during the 19th and 20th centuries, related to colonialism, the emergence of independent states, the development of the local clergy, and the reception of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. The course also highlights the contribution of Asian Christians to the development of theological thought, interreligious dialogue, and educational, social, and charitable activities.
Special attention is given to a reflection on the contemporary situation of local Churches in Asia in the 21st century. Students learn about the specific characteristics of the Churches in individual Asian regions and countries, their structures, forms of pastoral and missionary activity, as well as the challenges arising from operating in societies dominated by non-Christian religions. Topics discussed include interreligious dialogue, the inculturation of the faith, migration, secularization, religious persecution, and the dynamic growth of certain Christian communities.
As a result, students gain in-depth knowledge of the historical development, theological characteristics, and contemporary activities of the Asian Churches, as well as their significance for the universal mission of the Church and for contemporary intercultural and interreligious dialogue.
