Hebrew – Morphology WT-SST-JHM
The course introduces the fundamentals of Biblical Hebrew, including the alphabet, writing and pronunciation conventions, and the reading of vocalized texts. In the subsequent part of the course, students will study the structure of consonantal roots, principles of word formation, the inflection of nouns and adjectives, pronominal and prepositional forms, and the verbal system, including the individual binyanim, regular and irregular verbs, and the most important derived forms. Particular attention will be given to identifying, analyzing, and describing inflected forms found in the texts of the Hebrew Bible.
Grammatical knowledge will be developed in close connection with the practical reading of selected biblical passages. Students will learn to identify word roots, determine grammatical forms and their functions within sentences, and use dictionaries, grammars, concordances, and other philological tools. Exercises will include morphological analysis, translation, and basic interpretation of Hebrew texts.
The aim of the course is to prepare students to work independently with the text of the Hebrew Bible, develop their ability to identify and describe grammatical forms accurately, and demonstrate the importance of linguistic analysis for the exegesis and theological interpretation of the biblical text.
