New Testament - Johannine literature WT-DTE-NTJ
Course contents:
Historical-critical introduction to the above mentioned NT books: ancient manuscripts, author, date and place of origin, historical ambience, ect. An attentive exegesis of short passages chosen from them.
Details:
1. Characteristic features of the Corpus Johanneum.
2. The Gospel of John and the Synoptic Gospels.
3. Ancient Greek manuscripts containing the text of the Gospel of John. Characteristic vocabulary and style of the FG. The literal and symbolic levels of its narration.
4. Ancient historical and ideological-religious backgrounds that might have influenced the originality of the FG.
5. Literary and theological structure of the FG: analysis of various models in synchronic and diachronic approaches.
6. Stages of the FG’ redaction as a result of development and growth of the “Johannine community/school”.
7. Issues concerning the authorship, time and place of origin of the FG (various hypotheses).
8. Letters of John (1-2-3 Jn): their similarities and differences, and their relations to the FG. Historical-critical and literary analysis of 1-2-2 Jn.
9. First letter of John - exegetical and theological issues.
10. Second and Third letter of John - exegetical and theological issues.
11. Revelation of John: character of the writing and its similarity to the Jewish apocalyptic literature of the intertestamental period.
12. Genre(s) of the Rv and Sitz im Leben of its author and addressees.
13. Authorship, time and place of origin of Rv – various hypotheses.
14. Models of interpretation of Rv suggested on different stages of Church’ history.
15. Problems concerning an adequate interpretation of the symbolism of Rv and consequently its theological message.
Assessment methods:
Gradual two-stages examination: a paper written at home (personal research) and a final oral examination. The final note is a mean value.
