Interpretations of visual materials WT-DKS-DMSM
We all now live in a world of the image, or iconosphere, which increasingly dominates the logosphere that has occupied primacy in communication studies for centuries. The study of social communication today encompasses both language and image, although the latter is increasingly becoming the subject of research or scientific reflection. Visual communication has occupied an important place in social communication and media studies since the 'pictorial turn' (Mitchell's 'pictorial turn' and Boehm's 'iconic turn'). Seminar classes dedicated to the interpretation of visual materials allow students to learn methods and techniques for interpreting visual materials and to apply them in their thesis work.

The seminar is a form of special work of the student under the supervision of the promoter, who manages the student's research project in such a way that he demonstrates both the theoretical knowledge necessary to carry out the task as well as research methods and techniques. The essence of the seminar focused on the interpretation of visual materials is to familiarize the seminar participants with the methods used in the research of image, advertising, photography, etc., and to choose a method that will prove useful in the student's own research. The choice of the topic of work should be closely related to the nature of the seminar. |

Learning outcomes
W1 - knowledge - in-depth knowledge and understanding of selected issues in the field of visual communication
W2 - knowledge - in a deeper degree knows and understands methods of research of visual materials and is able to apply them in his/her work
U1 - skills - he/she is able to search for literature on the subject, construct a table of contents, formulate the title of the thesis, has the ability to make footnotes
Assessment criteria
Stages of the student's work during the whole cycle of classes:
1. Determining the topic of the work, literature review and preparation of a bibliography.
2. Writing the first chapter of the work, selection of research methods and tools, selection of research material.
3. Analysis of the research material and writing the second chapter of the work.
4. Writing the third chapter of the work, introduction and conclusion; preparing for defense.
The final evaluation - substantive and formal - concerns the individual elements of the thesis: definition of the research interests, the research area, the research concept, the thesis topic and chapter plan, the 1st subchapter, the 1st chapter, the 2nd chapter, the entire thesis. The final mark is the arithmetic mean - rounded up in 0.5 degree increments - of the mid-term and final grades.
For 1st year: mid-term credit in 1st semester: definition of research interests. Final credit in semester 1: research area. Mid-term credit in semester 2: research design. Final credit in semester 2: thesis topic and chapter plan.
For 2nd year: mid-term credit in 1st semester: 1st subsection of 1st chapter. Final credit in semester 1: 1st chapter. Mid-term credit in semester 2: 2nd chapter. Mid-term credit in semester 2: entire paper.
W1, W2, U1
Individual elements of the thesis: determination of research interests, research area, research concept, thesis topic and chapter plan, preparation of the 1st subchapter of the 1st chapter, 1st chapter, 2nd chapter, the whole thesis.
For the grade 2 - lack of the presented element of the thesis within the deadline set by the promoter.
for a grade of 3 - an element of the thesis was presented within the deadline set by the promoter, but the elements require thorough substantive and formal improvement.
