Jewish art of the first half of the 20th century: selected issues. WNHS-HS-Jaofh20
The class is designed to familiarize participants with the following topics:
1.Organizational classes - discussion of the syllabus, grading criteria, grading scale, scope of the colloquium, getting acquainted with the participants' level of knowledge in the field of art history. Introduction to lectures - Jewish religious art vs. secular art, Haskalah and its influence on the development of Polish-Jewish art - its specifics.
2.The beginnings of Jewish secular art in Poland and its paths of development - Alexander Lesser, Maurycy Gottlieb, Leopold Horowitz and Samuel Hirszenberg.
3.Independent Poland - the socio-political situation of the Jews, the first artistic circles, Warsaw - the circle of Yitzhak Leibush Peretz and the Jewish Art Propaganda Society and its activities.
4. In the circle of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and Tadeusz Pruszkowski - the Warsaw School, the Brotherhood of St. Luke, selected artistic groups and artists.
5. Polish-Jewish sculptors, painters and graphic artists - selected examples.
6. Yiddish Jung - Jewish artistic and literary avant-garde.
7. Ecole de Paris - characteristics and selected artists.
8. credit colloquium - online - Mteams.
Class - 15 hours - includes a lecture illustrated with presentation and film footage. And short presentations by students on topics selected from the list - available at MTeams.

Learning outcomes
1 The lecture participant has a basic knowledge of the importance of the history of Jewish art among the humanities and is aware of its thematic and methodological specificity.
22 The student has a structured basic knowledge of the types, functions and iconography of secular Jewish art.
3. Knows and understands the basic methods of interpreting Jewish art objects and the terminology appropriate to it. Understands the impact of historical and cultural conditions on art and its layer of meaning.
4. Is aware of the complexity of issues related to Jewish art and the need to study it.
5. Knows institutions that research the issues connected with Jewish art.
6. Student is able to construct a logical written and oral statement in English on Jewish art at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Student workload includes 45 [90] hours [1 hour x 2 for foreign language classes] = 3 ECTS: 15 [30] hours monographic lecture + 30 [60] hours student work: 20 [40] hours - reading and analysis of primary literature and 5 articles indicated to be read; 10[20] hours preparation for the credit colloquium.
Assessment criteria
REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE THE COURSE:
- attendance in class- max 30 points / one unexcused absence is allowed, subsequent absences “cost” minus 2 points each
presentation on a topic selected from the list - max 10 points
- passing the colloquium - max 60 points, minimum 36 points.
- SEMESTER GRADE - MAX 100 PTS [60 PTS PASS].
