Part II: Characteristic topics specific to collections of biblical books and role of key biblical institutions
1) Pentateuch. Role of Law and main high days and holidays for identity.
2) National or sacred history? Description of main authority institutions (king and nation, Sanhedrin) and religious institutions (cult and Jerusalem Temple, synagogue) – Deuteronomistic historiography, work of chroniclers and historiography of 1 and 2 Maccabees.
3) Institution of biblical prophets. Collection of prophetic books – range of issues of Old Testament prophetic texts.
4) Topics of reflection in the Old Testament wisdom literature.
5) Cultural context of the Gospels – backgrounds of literary parallels and differences.
Part III: The Bible in culture
Presentations and discussions on selected topics related to references to the Bible in the culture.

1) Acquired knowledge
After the course the student should be able:
a) to define basic biblical concepts; to refer elementary knowledge about literacy, historical and cultural issues relevant to the Bible;
b) to explain the impact of the Bible on culture;
c) to identify origins and meanings of the most important biblical threads and motifs, and to distinguish them from the motifs of other cultural traditions.
2) Acquired skills
After the course the student should be able:
a) to find, to evaluate, and to select information on functioning of the Bible in the European culture, and to display the results of the research with the help of multimedia;
b) to interpret the biblical text in Polish translation with basic tools used in biblical studies and other texts of culture to analyze and evaluate the relationships between them, and to get the ability to formulate his own opinion and content-related arguments.
3) Social competences
During the course student should:
a) increase an awareness of his knowledge and understand the continuous need for personal development;
b) learn to work in a team, and understand his own responsibility for the final results of the work of the whole team;
Student’s workload consists of obligatory participation in 30 hours of lectures, and of extra time which he should spend studying source texts in order to possess the required knowledge, and of team-work involving preparation of a multimedia presentation for the purpose of presenting it during the course.

The final evaluation of a student consists of:
1) Participation in the classes.
2) Presentation of indicated subject in small groups during the course.
3) Final oral examination.
The final exam verifies student’s mastery of introductory material of the course and knowledge of content of the following biblical texts: Genesis; Exodus 1-20 & 32-34; Numbers 20-24; Joshua 1-6; Judges 10-16; 1 Samuel; 2 Samuel; 1 Kings 1-13 & 17-20; 2 Kings 1-8; Ruth; Tobit; Judith; Esther; Isaiah; Jeremiah; Ezekiel; Daniel; Jonah; Job, Canticle of Canticles, Wisdom of Solomon; 2 Maccabees; Luke, John, Acts, Revelation.
