The aim of this course is to explore the most important ideas, motifs, and themes prevalent in Greek spiritual culture, primarily in the philosophy, religion, and literature of ancient Greeks and Romans; their influence on spiritual culture, especially on Christian philosophy and religious spirituality in later Europe, which will allow students to recognize the ancient, especially Greek, roots of European spiritual culture and Christianity. Homer and Hesiod. The pre-philosophical image of the world and humanity in the works of Homer and Hesiod. Ethical ideals in Homer and Hesiod. Greek mysteries and their influence on the development of Greek philosophy, the Greek image of the world and humanity, and Greek spiritual culture in general. Greek tragedy. The birth of Greek tragedy. The religious roots of Greek tragedy. Mythological, religious, and philosophical motifs in the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Greek philosophy. The most important ideas, motifs, and images of Greek philosophy. The birth of Greek philosophy. The spiritual nature of Greek philosophy. How Greek philosophers shaped the spirituality of the ancient Greeks and their perception of the world. The influence of ancient Greek philosophy on the spiritual culture of later Europe. The most important trends in Greek philosophy. Platonism and its particular influence on European spiritual culture and Christianity. Other philosophical trends still present in European spiritual culture (Aristotelianism, Stoicism, Epicureanism, and their later emanations). The encounter between Christianity and the spiritual culture of ancient Greece and Rome, especially Greek philosophy. |
