Politics and Media in Contemporary Italy WH-KON-U2-PolitInfor
The course is basically divided into four sections. In the first, the characteristics of the liberal turn of the early twentieth century will be analysed, along with the peculiarities of the Giolittian age and the dynamics of the development of the Fascist regime, through the story of the great newspapers that sprang up in Milan, the true Italian capital of journalism and publishing, and with particular attention paid to the explosion of radio broadcasting sytem. In the second, which focuses on the Resistance, the birth of the Republic and the reconstruction of the 1950s, much space will be devoted to the democratic rebirth of the Italian press and the main innovations on the cultural and publishing scene. In the third section, the main political and economic-social events of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s will be addressed through the story of television journalism and in the wake of the great innovation represented by the appearance and development of private broadcasters. Finally, the last section will focus specifically on the complex political transition of the 1990s, in parallel with the advent of pay-TV and the onset of the digital and computer revolution, which was destined to have such a profound impact on the technical, cultural, semiotic and deontological profile of the journalistic profession as to threaten its very survival.
