(in Polish) Historic House Museums in the Collective Memory Approach WH-KON-HistHoMu
The course presents historic house museums and their cultural significance in the context of collective memory. The class starts with an introduction to the definition of a historical house museum and the history of its representation in Western culture. Afterwards, there is a review of the elements of Maurice Halbwachs' theory of collective memory and its implementation in order to fully understand the nature of the functioning of this type of cultural institution. Representative examples from European and American culture will be used to develop a narrative around historical, cultural and social phenomena, which function in collective memory due to them. The key topics include: the different ways of perceiving the past in the second half of the nineteenth century, the role of cities and the working class in the construction of a new aesthetic of the early twentieth century, the biography of the artist and its utilisation in art studies, colonialism and cultural appropriation, and the new group of historic houses, which are mementos of idols of the broader pop-culture. Through a selection of examples, the course introduces the diversity of measures that are involved in building and maintaining collective memory.
