Course description
The course addresses theoretical and practical issues related to teaching Italian to primary school-aged children. Particular attention is paid to the use of fairy tales and storytelling as tools for developing learners’ comprehension, spoken and written production, vocabulary and linguistic creativity.
The course covers selected strategies for working with narrative texts, methods of telling, transforming and creating stories, and ways of adapting materials to learners’ age, language level and needs. Important points of reference include Gianni Rodari’s ideas presented in Grammatica della fantasia and selected elements of fairy-tale structure inspired by Vladimir Propp’s Morphology of the Folktale.
The course also considers different contexts of Italian language teaching: as a first language, second language, foreign language and in bilingual classrooms. Its aim is to develop students’ ability to design and implement teaching activities based on storytelling, creativity and active learner participation.
