Part I: Introductory issues
1) Features of the original languages of the Bible. Authorship and redaction of biblical texts in different circumstances. Means of transmitting of the biblical text – autographs and apographs. The most important preserved papyri and codices.
2) Etymology and definition of the Bible. The canons of the Bible as the final result of a literary and religious development. Characteristics of the basic canons of the Bible.
3) Key issues and topics specific to collections of biblical books.
a) The Old Testament historiography: Pentateuch and its main characters. Deuteronomistic historiography, work of chroniclers and historiography of 1 and 2 Maccabees – evaluation of selected characters.
b) The Old Testament wisdom: poetics of biblical wisdom books.
c) Collection of prophetic books – range of issues of Old Testament prophetic texts. Characteristics of prophetic perspective on selected topics.
d) The four Gospels – literary differences in the construction of the testimony of Jesus. Features of historiography in Acts – presentation of key characters. Apocalypse of John - what are its main subjects?
4) The text of the biblical canon and apocryphal literature. Examples of biblical apocrypha and their role in culture.
5) Literary genres in the Bible.
6) Biblical hermeneutic.
7) Biblical translations. Critical editions. Examples of the most important ancient and Polish translations of the Bible.
Part II: The Bible in literature
Students’ teamwork – presentations and discussions on selected topics related to references to the Bible in literature.

Type of subject
1) Acquired knowledge
After the course the student should be able:
a) to define basic biblical concepts; to refer elementary knowledge about literacy, historical and cultural issues relevant to the Bible;
b) to explain the impact of the Bible on Polish language and literature;
c) to identify the origins and meanings of the most important biblical threads and motifs and to distinguish them from the motifs of other cultural traditions.
2) Acquired skills
After the course the student should be able:
a) to find, to evaluate, and to select information on the functioning of the Bible in the European culture, and to display the results of the research with the help of multimedia;
b) to interpret the biblical text in Polish translation with basic tools used in literary studies, and to analyze the relationships between biblical characters, themes, and cultural ideas.
3) Social competences
a) During the course student should increase an awareness of his knowledge and understand the continuous need for personal development;
b) During the course, student should learn to work in a team, and understand his own responsibility for the final results of the work of the whole team.
Student’s workload consists of obligatory participation in 30 hours of lectures, and of extra time which he should spend studying source texts in order to possess the required knowledge, and of team-work involving preparation of a multimedia presentation for the purpose of presenting it during the course.
Methods and criteria of assessment:
The final evaluation of a student consists of:
1) Evaluation of individual student work – oral examination - basic knowledge of the Bible. It verifies student’s mastery of introductory material of the course and knowledge of content of the following biblical texts: Genesis; Exodus 1-20 & 32-34; Numbers 20-24; Joshua 1-6; Judges 10-16; 1 Samuel; 2 Samuel; 1 Kings 1-13 & 17-20; 2 Kings 1-8; Ruth; Tobit; Judith; Esther; Isaiah; Jeremiah; Ezekiel; Daniel; Jonah; Job, Canticle of Canticles, 2 Maccabees; Luke, John, Acts, Revelation.
2) Evaluation of student’s teamwork – preparation within the team of a given subject concerning: borrowings from the Bible, biblical inspirations in literature, references and polemics with the Bible in selected literary works, and presentation of the results to the whole group. In this task, the assessment is centered primarily on the ability to recognize connections between literature and the Bible, and on the ability to analyze and evaluate the nature of such relationships, as well as to demonstrate the ability for creative work in a team.
