Bird ecology and conservation WF-OB-EOP
The lecture introduces the issues of bird ecology. Presents research methods and used in investigations and conservation of birds. Focuses on some examples of the bird conservation management as well as the habitat management.
1. What does bird ecologist do?
2. Methods of field work with birds – ethical and legal issues, safety in the field.
3. Bird census or surveys – why do we count birds?
4. Biology and ecology of breeding birds - the methods of field research.
5. Why and how do we catch birds, handling.
6. Why do we band birds - metal rings and colour bands and other methods of individual marking.
7. Why do we take blood, methods of collection and preservation.
8. Molecular research of birds (molecular ecology).
9. Diet and foraging – the methods of feeding ecology research.
10. Habitat selection and nest-site selection – the methods of field research.
11. Behavioural research of birds - what can we observed in the field? (behavioural ecology).
12. Different aspects of breeding biology and ecology of birds.
13. Conservation management of endangered birds.
14. Life in the colonies of gulls and terns.

Assessment criteria
Knowledge (EK 1-2)
The multimedia presentation made by the student based on a randomly selected article in the field of ecology or bird protection will be assessed. The form, content and manner of presenting the presentation will be assessed, as well as the ability to find appropriate material for the presentation.
2.Skills (EK 3)
Assessed participation in discussion following the lecture and student presentations.
3.Competences (EK 4) The ability to independently use various sources in the field of ecology, behaviour and species protection of birds, including foreign-language literature, assessed on the basis of a multimedia presentation.
