ML: Philosophical Aspects of Human Rights WF-FI-212-WMAN-ME22
Since the late 1940s, through the Cold War and after the fall of communism in Europe, thanks to the UN, other international organizations and some governments, human rights have become a platform for dialogue and a desirable standard of domestic and international politics.
However, from the theoretical point of view, these rights - individual rights, as well as their general idea - are understood differently in different cultures or religious traditions, and in political and social practice (also in the so-called "developed" Western countries) they are sometimes disregarded.
There is an ongoing dispute - among philosophers, political scientists, sociologists and lawyers - concerning the very need or usefulness of formulating human rights and introducing them into the legal system. Advocates of recognizing the inherent rights of persons seek a justification that would be accepted worldwide. The result of this process has an impact on the expansion of the catalog of rights, taking into account the claims of various interest groups and political practice, protection of rights and requirements for governments.
The aim of the lecture is to present the idea of human rights as intended by their creators, and to criticize it from various points of view. Various ways of justifying the existence of individual rights and their relationship with the concept of man and community, the theory of values and the laws of nature will be presented. The issue of the ideologization of human rights and the problem of expanding the existing system will be discussed.
