The class is designed to familiarize students with basic microbiological research techniques and basic technological processes.
Scope of topics:
1. Microbiology of wastewater.
2. Technologies of bioremediation of soils.
3. Technologies of waste stabilization and solidification.
4. The process of bioleaching heavy metals from waste.
5. Antibiotic resistance

Effect 2. The student understands in a deeper degree issues concerning wastewater treatment and methods of environmental research.

Effect 3. The student is able to apply advanced techniques and research tools of environmental engineering in biological and chemical processes.
Effect 4 The student is able to independently plan and carry out the process of self-education and direct the work of a team, cooperate with others in teamwork and take the leading role in teams.

Assessment criteria
Preparation for class, reports, oral answers, class attendance (one excused absence possible).
Assessment 2 (insufficient) The student does not understand issues related to environmental technologies; does not understand issues related to wastewater treatment and environmental research methods; is not able to apply advanced environmental engineering research techniques and tools; is not able to plan and carry out self-learning processes independently and to lead teamwork, cooperate with others in teamwork and take a leading role in teams; is not able to make in-depth use of issues related to environmental research methods; is not able to work independently and cooperate in a team on a given task.
Assessment 3 (sufficient) The student has a basic understanding of environmental protection technologies; understands issues related to wastewater treatment and environmental research methods; is able to apply advanced environmental engineering research techniques and tools; can independently plan and carry out self-study processes and manage teamwork, cooperate with others in teamwork and take a leading role in teams; can make sufficient use of issues related to environmental research methods; can work independently and cooperate in a team on a given task.
Assessment 4 (good) The student has a good understanding of environmental technologies; understands issues related to wastewater treatment and environmental research methods; is able to apply advanced environmental engineering research techniques and tools; is able to plan and carry out self-learning processes independently and to lead teamwork, interact with others in teamwork and take a leading role in teams; is able to make good use of issues related to environmental research methods; is able to work well independently and to cooperate in a team on a given task.
Assessment 5 (very good) The student understands issues related to environmental technologies to an advanced degree; understands issues related to wastewater treatment and environmental research methods; is able to apply advanced environmental engineering research techniques and tools; is able to plan and carry out self-study processes independently and to lead teamwork, interact with others in teamwork and take a leading role in teams; is able to use issues related to environmental research methods to a very good degree; is able to work independently and to cooperate in a team on a given task.
