Environmental chemistry WB-IS-36-15
Environmental chemistry covers issues relating to chemical and biochemical processes occurring in nature. It deals with the processes occurring on the Earth, including atmosphere, hydrosphere and terrestrial environment.
Full description of the global environment requires knowledge of the following components:
- composition and chemical structure of the main elements of the environment,
- physicochemical and chemical processes occurring on the Earth,
- changes occurring in nature under the influence of contaminants and phenomena caused by anthropogenic factors.
Environmental chemistry deals also with the relationship between these factors.
The purpose of this discipline is to provide a cleaner and healthier environment.

Learning outcomes
IS1_W03 - has a knowledge of the occurrence of chemical reactions necessary to understand the basic principles of environmental chemistry
IS1_W05 - has a basic knowledge of the development trends in the field of environmental chemistry
IS1_U01 - can find the information from the literature, databases and other appropriately chosen sources; can integrate the obtained information, interpret and draw conclusions, as well as formulate and justify opinions
IS1_U03 - can prepare and present an oral presentation, concerning specific problems in the field of environmental chemistry
IS1_U04 - has the ability to self-study
IS1_U07 - can plan and perform the experiments, write down the reactions and perform chemical calculations concerning processes occurring in the environment, interpret the obtained results and draw conclusions
IS1_U16 – can - in formulating and solving engineering tasks - see the system, technological and non-technical aspects, in particular can use knowledge from different fields of environmental chemistry
IS1_K01 - understands the need to lifelong learning; can inspire and organize the learning process of other people
IS1_K02 - is aware of importance and understands the non-technical aspects and results of engineering activities including its influence on the environment and the related responsibility for the decisions made
Learning outcomes - knowledge and competencies: understanding of chemical processes and migration of chemical elements and compounds in the environment; expectations on the results of presence of harmful and toxic substances in the environment.

Assessment criteria
Written exam (open and closed questions) in two parts. To access the exam it is necessary to credit classes.
Maximum result is 60 points (2 x 30 points).
