Essential issiues:
On completion of this subject students will be able to:
• describe a variety of approaches to the organisation of and strategies for teaching Biology and junior science in Secondary schools;
• demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the VCE Biology study design;
• demonstrate a knowledge of available resources relevant to teaching Biology and junior science in Secondary schools;
• devise valid methods for diagnosis, assessment and evaluations in Biology teaching and junior science;
• demonstrate the ability to plan a unit of work design for Biology and junior science;
• develop personal skills in special areas through the demonstrations, elective programme and excursions.
• demonstrate decision-making skills in curriculum, management, and student motivation that reflect actual conditions in middle and high school classrooms.
• demonstrate understanding of the biology concepts that are commonly taught in middle and high school and the misconceptions that impact students’understanding of these concepts.
• explore lesson planning strategies that are appropriate for the developmental stages of middle and high school students and will adapt existing lesson plans to demonstrate their understanding of inquiry learning and student management issues.
• investigate a question about student learning in the biological sciences.
