Neurocognitivistics WB-BI-NKG
Recent developments of non-invasive methods of imaging the structure and function of the brain, as well as methods of influencing functions of its various systems resulted in new possibilities of investigation and influencing behavior of animals and humans. During lectures the new methods will be described and results achieved with the methods that shed light on the cognitive and decision making processes of the brain explained.
Results of recent interdisciplinary investigations at the border of neurobiology, psychology and ethology that brought many important results and broadened our knowledge on the mechanisms and limits of our perception, creation of concepts and imaginations, memory, emotions and its relations with cognitive processes. Knowledge of the new methods and their applications should allow students future collaboration with the teams using fMRI.

Effects of education:
a) Concerning knowledge: Student will gain knowledge of contemporary methods of neuroimaging and functions of brain structures. Will learn results of new research on the borders of neurobiology and psychology that in the last 15 years brought many important insights into the ways of information processing in the nervous system. Many of these results are not yet fully integrated into the canon of psychological knowledge. Students will get information about new developments in Artificial Inteligence (AI).
b) Concernig abilities: Student will gain knowledge enabling her/him understending the important research in the areas of cognitive psychology and neurobiology. Student will be able to connect new information with the classical psychological paradigm.
c) Concernig social competences: Student is going to broaden her/his knowledge of the biological nmechanisms and limiteations of human perception, memory, and rational thinking and behavior. Knowledge concernig new methods of neuroimaging and research on humans is going to allow her/him joining a scientific team conducting research using EEG, PET or fMRI methods.
Assessment criteria
Exam will be held in writing. Three questions concerning problems discussed in the lectures will be asked. The examined person should present her/his knowledge and opinions on the problems, including implications of new scientific developments in science. Scoring - 0-10 points for each answer, maximum possible sum - 30 points. Grades (on a scale from 2 to 5) will be awarded based on the total of points obtained. The minimum for grade "3" is 15 points, and for grade "5" - 27 points. Intermediate grades will be awarded in proportion to the number of points scored. Exams in all terms will be held according to the same rules.
