The student will be familiarized with the basic knowledge of systematics, phylogeny and animal classification. The student learns the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and classical and molecular methods of phylogeny reconstruction. The basic methods will be presented, i.e. the maximum parsimony, distance method, Bayesian methods; methods for estimating the internal support of the tree branch will be presented (bootstrap, Bremer index, a posteriori probability), as well as methods for estimating the divergence time (molecular clock) and comparative methods (e.g. analysis of the evolution of morphological traits). Selected issues of modern biology will be discussed in which these methods are used, e.g. estimating the evolutionary relationship of organisms.
