Biotechnology WB-BI-36-09lab
The Biotechnology is conducted as a lecture (30 hours) and practical classes (30 hours) The lecture covers basic knowledge in the field of plant cell biotechnology, including plant cultures in vitro, biotransformation, production of recombinant proteins, animal cell culture, animal cloning, applications of biotechnology in environmental protection, social reception of biotechnology. The lecture covers all the basic knowledge of white, red and green biotechnology, including recombinant DNA, cloning, food and drug manufacturing from application of biotechnological techniques, techniques used in in vitro cultures of plants and animals. It will be shown how to interfere with the genome of the plant and use its full morphogenetic potential. Methods ensuring clean technologies in waste disposal and technological solutions allowing for the protection and preservation of the natural environment will be presented. Practical classes - exercises, include training students in the basic methodology of working with microorganisms, including kinetics of microbiological processes in biotechnology, working with recombinant DNA, establishing and conducting various types of in vitro cultures of plant and animal tissues. Students learn to work with plants in sterile conditions and
numerous applications of tissue and organ culture under sterile conditions, preparation of media and agar substrate for plant breeding. They master various methods of sterilizing plant material, vegetative fragments as well as seeds. They determine the morphogenetic potential of these organs, micro-propagate plants from various vegetative tissues, determine the effect of hormones on these processes. Students will also learn how biotechnological methods can be used in environmental protection, including wastewater treatment and water treatment in the close proximity of Kampinos National Park.
