Moral imperfections of the Old Testament WT-P-FW-BPNM
When reaching for the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament, we already come across texts describing certain behaviors of the Israelites that are generally considered unacceptable and reprehensible. Such acts include: ruthless use of revenge and retaliation, cursing and cursing enemies, or waging genocidal and extermination wars. It also seems that the God of the Old Testament allowed and even sanctioned such immoral behavior, hence the explanation of the meaning of these Old Testament passages causes many difficulties. Even the Pontifical Biblical Commission admitted that "the Scriptures of the Old Testament contain imperfect and outdated elements that God's pedagogy could not eliminate right away." The aim of the lecture is to look for answers to the questions: how to understand and interpret the above aspects in a religious and moral perspective? and what historical and social conditions should be taken into account in assessing the moral principles of ancient Israel?
