Wealth and Poverty within the Bible - Practical Application in Teaching WT-SSTA-WAP
One can find seemingly mutually exclusive texts on wealth or poverty in the Bible. Being rich in some texts is considered a blessing from God, other times as an obstacle in the relationship with God. Poverty is sometimes indicated as desirable in the life of a believer; other times, it is shown as a result of injustice or human guilt. The modern reader sometimes has a problem understanding these ambivalences. Moreover, in contemporary culture, the Bible is often used to support economic views and ideologies and even as a guide on acquiring material goods.
The main goal of the lecture is to familiarise the student more deeply with what and how the Word of God revealed in the Holy Scripture says about wealth and poverty to gain a reliable basis for transferring the universal meaning of the biblical teaching on wealth and poverty to the teaching of the Church in the present.
The student will learn how concepts semantically related to wealth and poverty are defined and how the context of their occurrence affects the understanding of the issue. The joint discussion of these issues based on selected biblical texts aims to learn about the possibilities of applying practical biblical teaching in preaching and catechesis and transmitting the Church’s teaching on social issues, especially in economic disproportions in contemporary societies.

Kryteria oceniania
To pass the course, the student is required to:
- participate in classes and actively participate in discussions
- prepare a written academic essay with a bibliography (4-6 pages) on a designated topic
- prepare a presentation on a designated topic (topic different from the essay topic; presentation time max. 20 minutes) and its implementation during classes and animate the discussion.
The presentation is the basis for animating a joint discussion with other participants of the classes. It verifies on an ongoing basis the acquisition of basic terminology and knowledge in the field of pragmatic interpretation of specific biblical texts.
Animating the discussion tests knowledge in the field of the Church's teaching on poverty and wealth based on the biblical message and allows for the assessment of the ability to apply this knowledge in practice depending on the level of recipients (catechesis for children and adults; formation teaching of consecrated persons).
The final written work verifies knowledge of biblical terminology in a given topic, the influence of the semantics of biblical terms on theological concepts of poverty and wealth, and the ability to apply it correctly. It verifies knowledge of selected essential, recent documents and teachings of the Church and its rooting in biblical teaching on poverty and wealth. It provides an opportunity to evaluate the ability of independent theological reflection on a given issue.
