Marriage and Family in Theological Perspective WT-SSTA-MF
This course focuses on a multidimensional study of marriage and family, including social, psychological, cultural, and religious aspects. Students will examine historical developments in family life, the nature and functions of marriage, and the moral and theological issues surrounding polygamy and divorce in the Old Testament. Topics include Jesus’ teaching on marriage, the theology of marriage in the Catholic tradition, unity and indissolubility, the sacramental nature of marriage, and the family as Ecclesia domestica (Domestic Church). The course also covers marriage preparation, Catholic magisterial teaching (e.g., Familiaris Consortio by Pope John Paul II, Amoris Laetitia by Pope Francis), and perspectives on marriage and family in Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, including legal, political, and social dimensions.
