Social capital: theory and empirical research WSE-SO-SC
The course covers main theories of social capital: P.Bourdeiu, J.Coleman, R.Putnam and international studies of social capital, trust and community capacity. The students will analyze theoretical concepts of social capital, its critique and discuss practical applicability of the concept.
Empirical international studies of social capital, trust and community capacity will be presented.
The topics covered include:
1.Main theories: P.Bourdeiu, J.Coleman, R.Putnam
2. Methods of study: macrostatistics, surveys, experiments and their combination. Ecological fallacy in the combined macro-micro datasets.
3. Empirical studies: rural sociology. Concepts, research tools and findings
4. Empirical studies: urban sociology. Concepts, research tools and findings
5. Local governance and social capital; trust and community capacity.
6. Case study: Protection of environment and social capital of local communities.
THe students will be given a task to construct their own scale of social capital using the survey data sets offered by the instructor. Applying the knowledge obrained during the lectures, the groups of students will develop their own concept of social trust and will try to colle ct indicators to measure some aspects of this concept. The result is a new measuerement created using the avaliable survey data and a short description of the concept: its functions, its components and their correlation.

Student learns about the types of data and the methods of analysis
Student learns the full terminology of the method
The student learns to discuss new measurement of social capital, discuss it and build a simple scale of social capital using the survey data and SPSS.
Students learn how to communicate and negotiate in working teams and how to present their work.

Working in group on the concept of social capital using empirical data - 40%
Presenting a result in oral group presentation (+ppt slides) and in coherent text-description - 40%
The highest score is awarded for:
- the analysis run in correspondence with statistical logics.
- the presentations that use terminology and refers to some theory and literature, developing the same vision of the working group
- the tables of presentation fully labeled and the questions from the survey properly cited.
