20th Century Polish History and Culture WH-KON-20thCentHisCu
During lectures students will have a chance to familiarise with the Polish history and culture in the 20th century, its international and national contexts. Students will gain knowledge about the major historical events and figures, as well as important works of literature, film and music. Classes will also include reading and analysing various literary texts by contemporary writes. At the end of the course students will have an understanding of cultural and historical process in Poland and the region in the 20th century, will be able to identify key dates, figures and movements and will be able to analyse modern Polish literature with references to the past achievements.

3-4. Polish Pre-War Cinema (2 lectures)
5. Literature in 1920s and 1930s
6-7. Polish Nobel Prize Winners in Literature – history and text analysis (2 lectures)
8. Poland After 1945 – Brief Overview
9. Censorship, Polish Underground Publishing, Jerzy Giedroyc and Kultura
10. Post-War Cinema
11. Famous Polish Documentaries and Documentary Film Directors
12. Visit to the National Museum in Warsaw
13. Polish Pop Music
13. Popular literature after 1989: crime and romance
14. Final exam – discussion on various topics related to and inspired by the problems discussed in class
