Social psychology of social problems WF-PS-PIC-ER
During this course we will apply social psychological science to understand societal problems in intergroup context, stemming from hierarchical organization of human societies. We will address the issue of inequality and have a discussion regarding its advantages and disadvantages. We will interpret statistics to build an understanding of whether contemporary societies are equal and whether they endorse discrimination and social exclusion. We will review major theoretical perspectives to understand motivations behind prejudice and discrimination: social identity perspective, social dominance theory, system justification theory, terror management theory. We will discuss the role of social norms, social learning and conformity in maintaining inequality, support of tyrannical power and exploitation of the disadvantaged. We will talk about conditions that encourage collective action towards social change and what happens when this action is thwarted.
The course is organized in 7 sessions accompanied by e-learning.
