LECTURE:
1. Development and change in adulthood. Basic issues.
2. Main theories and concepts of development in the course of life, with particular attention paid to adulthood (Havighurst, Duvall,Erikson,Levinson).
3. Adult development in the individualistic approach.
4. Cognitive development in adulthood. Wisdom-related issues.
5. Moral development in the course of life. Kohlberg's and Gilligan's theory.
6. Identity and personality in the course of life.
7. Early adulthood. Qualitative changes in social and cognitive-individualistic functioning.
8. Middle age. The turning point crisis in the middle of adult life. Quantitative and qualitative changes in social and cognitive-individualistic functioning.
9. Old age. Aging and the old age. The end of life.
10. Dying. Death. Mourning.
CLASSES:
Training effects:
1) Knowledge of basic diagnostic methods used in developmental psychology.
2) Knowledge of procedures used in the process of adaptation and construction of methods.
3) Awareness of methodological limitations of the accepted paradigms in developmental psychology.
Term II: A synthesis of knowledge of developmental stages.
Students divided into groups of 3 or 4 prepare an address combined with a multimedia presentation - a synthesis of knowledge regarding subsequent stages of development. The presentation should include: (1) characteristic features of the stage; (2) latest research found in scientific articles (EBSCO) serving as an illustration of current scientific discussion; (3) a practical depiction of issues in question (photographs, films, case descriptions; produced individually or excerpted from other sources i.e. the media, literature, film).
